Monterrico vs El Paredón: differences and which to choose for your trip

Monterrico is the most iconic beach destination on the Pacific coast of Guatemala, protected under the South Pacific Multiple-Use Natural Reserve, known as CECON. This ecological reserve encompasses a strip of mangroves, estuaries, and lagoons where over 100 species of waterfowl, crocodiles, iguanas, and reptiles native to the coastal ecosystem coexist. What makes Monterrico unique is its role as a sea turtle sanctuary: every year between July and January, olive ridley and leatherback turtles come to nest on its dark volcanic sand beaches. The Monterrico Turtle Hatchery conservation project collects nests, incubates the eggs under controlled conditions, and releases the hatchlings into the sea in ceremonies that visitors can witness. Monterrico's waves are perfect for beginner surfers, and the water temperature is warm year-round. The town has hostels, boutique hotels, seafood restaurants, and boat tours through the mangrove channels. From Guatemala City, it takes approximately 3 hours to get there, passing through Taxisco or the Port of Iztapa. The combination of nature, conservation, and beach makes Monterrico an unparalleled experience in Central America.

This little beach town is delightfully underdeveloped, authentic, and relaxed. This is not a resort town by any means. Lots of small hotels and hostels. The temperature stays hot at night, and you might have difficulty sleeping. The beach was mostly clean, and the waves were good.
