Where is El Paredón, Guatemala?
El Paredón Buena Vista is located in the department of Escuintla, on Guatemala's Pacific coast. It is situated at the mouth of the Los Esclavos River, within Sipacate-Naranjo National Park. Approximate coordinates are 14°00'N, 91°27'W. To get there, you must cross the estuary by ferry from Sipacate (Q5, 10 minutes).
Why is it called El Paredón?
The name "El Paredón" refers to the natural barrier of land and sand that separates the estuary from the Pacific Ocean—like a "wall" between the inland body of water and the ocean. This geographical formation is common on coasts with sandbars and coastal lagoons along the Guatemalan Pacific littoral.
Geographical characteristics of the beach
- Black volcanic sand: characteristic of the Guatemalan Pacific coast. The sand absorbs more heat than white sand, so wearing sandals is recommended.
- Beach break waves: break over a sandy bottom at 1–2.5 meters high depending on the season. Ideal for surfing.
- Mangrove ecosystem: the Chiquimulilla Canal and the estuary border the beach, with rich biodiversity of birds and crocodiles.
- Sea turtles: El Paredón is an important nesting site for leatherback and loggerhead sea turtles. The local turtle hatchery releases hatchlings from September to December.
Climate and best time to visit
El Paredón has a warm and humid climate year-round. The average temperature is 28–34°C. The dry season (November–April) offers sunny days and calmer seas. The rainy season (May–October) brings larger waves—perfect for surfing—and fewer tourists.

This little beach town is delightfully underdeveloped, authentic, and relaxed. This is not a resort town by any means. Lots of small hotels and hostels. The temperature stays hot at night, and you might have difficulty sleeping. The beach was mostly clean, and the waves were good.
Absolutely love this beach and community. Felt safe everywhere we went and locals were really nice and welcoming.
