Pacific Coast and Caribbean Coast: Guatemala's Two Coasts

The coasts of Guatemala are two: the Pacific to the south and the Caribbean to the east. In total, the country has approximately 400 kilometers of Pacific coastline and about 148 kilometers of Caribbean coastline. Although the Caribbean is less accessible, both coasts offer unique and unrepeatable experiences.

The Guatemalan Pacific coast is the most developed for tourism. Here you will find destinations such as El Paredón (surfing and ecotourism), Monterrico (sea turtles), Champerico (popular resort), Sipacate (untouched nature), and Iztapa (sport and deep-sea fishing). Volcanic black sand is the hallmark of these Pacific beaches. El Paredón, located in Sipacate-Naranjo National Park, is the premier surfing destination in all of Guatemala.

The Caribbean coast, smaller and less developed, offers the charm of Livingston, Garifuna culture, access to the cays, and unique gastronomy. It takes about 5-6 hours to reach the Guatemalan Caribbean from the capital. Also, check out the complete guide to the Guatemalan Pacific coast.

This little beach town is delightfully underdeveloped, authentic, and relaxed. This is not a resort town by any means. Lots of small hotels and hostels. The temperature stays hot at night, and you might have difficulty sleeping. The beach was mostly clean, and the waves were good.
