How to get to Champerico and what to do on this beach in Retalhuleu

Champerico is an authentic and peaceful beach located in the department of Retalhuleu, on Guatemala's southern Pacific coast. Unlike more touristy coastal destinations, Champerico retains the essence of a traditional fishing port where life revolves around the sea and fishing activities. Its dark sand beaches stretch for kilometers with little human intervention, ideal for those seeking rest, solitude, and direct contact with nature. Champerico's boardwalk, one of the longest on the Guatemalan Pacific, invites strolls at sunset while observing artisanal fishing activity. Fishing is the main economic activity: shrimp, croaker, snapper, and crabs arrive fresh directly from the boats to local eateries where they are served at affordable prices. Champerico is also known for its medium-height waves, frequented by local surfers who take advantage of the natural conditions without the crowds of other coastal spots. From Retalhuleu, the distance is approximately 45 minutes, and from Quetzaltenango, it's just over an hour. The tranquility, affordable prices, and authenticity of this Pacific corner make it a unique destination, perfect for family getaways or genuine relaxation.

This little beach town is delightfully underdeveloped, authentic, and relaxed. This is not a resort town by any means. Lots of small hotels and hostels. The temperature stays hot at night, and you might have difficulty sleeping. The beach was mostly clean, and the waves were good.
