Best Beach Towns in Guatemala — Pacific Coast Guide

Guatemala's Pacific Coast stretches over 250 km with several distinct beach towns, each with its own character. Here's the honest rundown of what each one offers and who it's best for.

1. El Paredón — Best Overall

El Paredón is Guatemala's most appealing beach town for international travelers. It's got a genuine village feel, consistent surf, quality accommodation, good food, and easy access to nature (mangroves, turtles, birds). Small enough to feel human-scale, developed enough to be comfortable. Best for: surfers, backpackers, couples, slow travelers.

2. Monterrico — Best for Families and Wildlife

Monterrico is the most visited beach in Guatemala, 2 hours from Guatemala City and 2.5 from Antigua. The CECON nature reserve and turtle project (July–Feb) make it a strong ecotourism destination. There's a full range of hotels, restaurants, and weekend markets. Best for: families, ecotourism, groups who want more infrastructure.

3. Sipacate — Best for Uncrowded Surf

Sipacate is El Paredón's quieter neighbor, separated by the same coastal lagoon. The break here is less consistent but often better quality, and you'll rarely share a peak with more than two other surfers. Minimal infrastructure — one or two basic places to eat and sleep. Best for: experienced surfers wanting an escape from the crowds.

4. Puerto San José — Best Day Trip from Guatemala City

Puerto San José is the default beach escape for Guatemala City residents. It's busy, has all basic amenities, and is the closest Pacific beach to the capital (1.5 hours). Not the prettiest, but functional. Best for: day trips, families wanting accessibility over atmosphere.

5. Champerico — Best Budget Beach

Champerico is a port town more than a beach destination, but its long, wide beach and accessible price point (especially from Quetzaltenango, just 1.5 hours away) make it popular with domestic travelers. The ocean is rough and not safe for swimming. Best for: a cheap beach day, Western Highland road trips.

6. Iztapa — Best for Fishing and Calm Lagoon

Iztapa sits between the Pacific and the Canal de Chiquimulilla, Guatemala's coastal lagoon system. It's the country's main sport fishing port — legendary for sailfish and marlin catches. Also a good spot for lagoon kayaking. Best for: serious anglers, lagoon lovers.

This little beach town is delightfully underdeveloped, authentic, and relaxed. This is not a resort town by any means. Lots of small hotels and hostels. The temperature stays hot at night, and you might have difficulty sleeping. The beach was mostly clean, and the waves were good.

Loved the sea and the waves, the black sand and how clean the beach is.
