Best Surf Spots in Guatemala: El Paredón, Sipacate & More

Guatemala might not be the first country that comes to mind for surfing, but it's quickly earning a reputation among surfers who know where to look. With a Pacific coastline stretching over 250 km, warm water year-round, consistent swells, and prices far lower than Costa Rica or Mexico, Guatemala's surf spots offer incredible value. Here's everything you need to know about the best surfing in Guatemala.

El Paredón: Guatemala's #1 Surf Spot

El Paredón Buena Vista is without question the top surf destination in Guatemala. Located in the Sipacate-Naranjo National Park, 2.5 hours from Guatemala City, the beach offers beach break waves that work year-round with heights of 1–3 meters. It's the most developed surf destination in the country, with multiple surf schools, surf camps, board rentals and beachfront accommodation. Perfect for all levels — from complete beginners to experienced surfers. The vibe is laid-back and international, with a steady mix of local and foreign surfers.

Best for: all levels | Season: year-round (bigger swells May–Nov) | Access: ferry from Sipacate

Sipacate: Advanced Waves, Local Vibe

Sipacate is the town across the estuary from El Paredón, but it also has its own surf spot with more powerful and hollow waves — better suited for intermediate to advanced surfers. The break here is less crowded and more technical. It's a raw, authentic experience with fewer tourists and more local flavor. Some experienced surfers specifically come to Sipacate to escape the El Paredón crowds during peak season.

Best for: intermediate–advanced | Season: May–November | Access: by road

Monterrico: Mellow Waves for Beginners

Monterrico is primarily known for its sea turtle reserve, but it also has a rideable beach break that's gentle enough for beginners. The waves are smaller and less consistent than El Paredón, but the village has a growing surf scene and basic board rental options. If you want to combine surfing with ecotourism (turtle liberation tours, mangrove kayaking), Monterrico is a solid choice.

Best for: beginners | Season: year-round | Access: 2.5 hr from Guatemala City via Taxisco

Las Lisas: Hidden Gem for Experienced Surfers

Las Lisas is a small fishing village on the Pacific coast between Monterrico and the El Salvador border. It has a powerful beach break that's less known to tourists and mostly surfed by locals and adventurous travelers. Infrastructure is minimal — bring your own board, water and snacks. Ideal for surfers who want to explore off-the-beaten-path Guatemala surf spots.

Best for: advanced | Season: May–October | Access: remote road from Taxisco

When is the Best Time to Surf in Guatemala?

Guatemala offers surfable waves year-round, but the best surf season runs from May to November when Pacific swells from the south increase in frequency and size. This coincides with the rainy season on land, but beach days are still common — mornings are typically clear with afternoon showers. December through April brings calmer, smaller waves that are ideal for learning. Water temperature stays around 26–28°C all year, so no wetsuit needed.

Guatemala Surf vs Costa Rica: Why Choose Guatemala

Guatemala's surf spots offer the same quality waves as many Costa Rica destinations at 40–60% lower prices. A week of surf camp in El Paredón with accommodation and lessons costs USD 250–400 — compared to USD 600–900+ in Costa Rica. The waves are less crowded, the culture is richer, and the overall experience is more authentic. For budget-conscious surfers looking for an undiscovered gem, Guatemala is the smart choice.

This little beach town is delightfully underdeveloped, authentic, and relaxed. This is not a resort town by any means. Lots of small hotels and hostels. The temperature stays hot at night, and you might have difficulty sleeping. The beach was mostly clean, and the waves were good.

Loved the sea and the waves, the black sand and how clean the beach is.
