Shuttle Direct, Bus or Private Car — Complete Transport Guide
Getting from Antigua Guatemala to El Paredón is one of the most common routes for travelers already touring the country: two strong tourist destinations, a reasonable day's distance apart. The trip takes between 2.5 and 3 hours, and there are three ways to do it.
Direct shuttle (the simplest option)
Several tour agencies in Antigua offer direct shuttle service to the Pacific coast, including drop-offs in El Paredón. It's door-to-door: they pick you up at your lodging in Antigua and drop you off at yours in El Paredón, no transfers. Ask at your hostel/hotel in Antigua about shuttles to "Sipacate" or "El Paredón" — it's the route most offered by agencies that work with surfers.
Private transport
If you're traveling in a group or prefer flexible timing, private transport (car with driver) covers the direct route without going through Guatemala City. The route avoids capital traffic by heading out through San Lucas Sacatepéquez toward the coast.
Bus + transfer (the budget option)
The cheapest route is a local bus from Antigua to Escuintla, then a second bus or pickup to Sipacate/El Paredón. It's slower and involves more waiting than the direct shuttle, but costs a fraction of the price. Check our guide on how to get to Escuintla for that first leg.
Own or rental car?
Driving, the trip takes about the same time as the shuttle (2.5-3 hours) following the route toward Escuintla and then Sipacate. There's private parking available in El Paredón for those arriving by car.
