Mangrove Tour El Paredón, Guatemala — What to Expect

The mangrove lagoon behind El Paredón is one of the most biologically rich ecosystems in Central America. A 3-hour boat tour takes you deep into the channels of the Sipacate-Naranjo National Park — through tunnels of roots, alongside crocodiles sunning on logs, under clouds of herons and kingfishers. It's one of the best wildlife experiences you can have in Guatemala outside of the jungle.

What You'll See

  • Birds: Roseate spoonbills, great blue herons, green kingfishers, frigatebirds, pelicans, anhingas, egrets, and dozens of shorebird species depending on the season.
  • Crocodiles: American crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus) are regularly spotted basking on lagoon banks. Your guide will slow the boat and cut the engine for close-up viewing.
  • Other wildlife: Iguanas, black-bellied whistling ducks, and freshwater turtles are common. Boat-billed herons are a nocturnal species sometimes spotted during dusk tours.
  • Plants: Red mangroves, black mangroves, and buttonwood mangroves form the dense tunnel system the boat navigates.

Tour Details

  • Duration: 3 hours (standard), can extend to 4–5 hours on request
  • Group size: 2–8 people per boat
  • Best times: Sunrise (5:30–6am departure) for most bird activity; late afternoon (4–5pm) for golden light and crocodile activity
  • What to bring: Binoculars, camera, light rain jacket, insect repellent, water

Why This Ecosystem Matters

The mangroves of El Paredón are part of the Sipacate-Naranjo National Park, a protected area that spans over 2,000 hectares. The mangrove system serves as a nursery for fish, a carbon sink, and a barrier against storm surges. It's one of the best-preserved coastal wetland systems on Guatemala's Pacific coast. Booking the Tour

Mangrove tours can be booked directly at the dock in El Paredón or through most hotels and hostels in the village. Same-day booking is usually available. Your hotel can also arrange a pickup point on the lagoon side of the village, avoiding the walk to the main dock.

Combining with Other Activities

Many visitors combine the morning mangrove tour with an afternoon surf lesson — two very different but equally memorable experiences in one day. See all El Paredón activities →

This little beach town is delightfully underdeveloped, authentic, and relaxed. This is not a resort town by any means. Lots of small hotels and hostels. The temperature stays hot at night, and you might have difficulty sleeping. The beach was mostly clean, and the waves were good.

Loved the sea and the waves, the black sand and how clean the beach is.
