Things to Do in El Paredón, Guatemala — Complete Activity Guide

El Paredón is small — one main dirt road, a boardwalk, and the ocean. But there's more to do here than you'd expect from a village of a few hundred people. Here's everything worth doing, from active adventures to low-key beach days.

1. Take a Surf Lesson

This is why most travelers come to El Paredón. The beach break here is consistent and powerful — ideal for learning but with real punch for experienced surfers. Multiple schools operate on the beach, offering 1.5–2 hour lessons with board and instructor included. First-timers regularly stand up on their first session. Book surf lessons in El Paredón →

2. Take a Mangrove Boat Tour

The lagoon behind El Paredón connects to the Sipacate-Naranjo National Park, one of the most biodiverse mangrove systems in Central America. A 3-hour boat tour takes you through narrow channels where you'll spot herons, kingfishers, roseate spoonbills, iguanas, and if you're lucky, crocodiles. Best done at sunrise or late afternoon. Several operators run daily departures from the village.

3. Watch (or Help) the Turtle Release

From July through February, the Poza del Nance turtle sanctuary near El Paredón releases olive ridley sea turtle hatchlings on the beach. Night tours (usually around 9–10pm) let you watch the release up close — one of the most moving wildlife experiences in Guatemala. Learn about El Paredón turtle tours →

4. Rent a Kayak and Explore the Lagoon

Several spots in town rent single and double kayaks by the hour. Paddle into the mangrove channels, explore the calmer lagoon side, or cross to the other bank to find empty sand. Morning is the best time — flat water, birds active, and no heat. Kayak rental in El Paredón →

5. Go Horseback Riding on the Beach

One of El Paredón's most iconic experiences: horses walking at the water's edge at golden hour. Local guides offer rides along the beach, typically 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. Sunset timing is everything — the black sand turns amber and the whole scene looks cinematic. Horseback riding in El Paredón →

6. Watch the Sunset from Bora

Bora is El Paredón's most popular beach bar and restaurant. Their beachfront deck is the unofficial sunset-watching spot for the entire village. Get there by 5:30pm to claim a good table. Learn about Bora El Paredón →

7. Walk to Playa Buena Vista

About 30 minutes north of the village by foot or 10 minutes by tuk-tuk, Playa Buena Vista is a quieter stretch of beach with fewer people and sometimes cleaner conditions. Good for an afternoon escape from the main boardwalk. About Playa El Paredón Buena Vista →

8. Visit the Public Beach

El Paredón's public beach (Playa Pública) is where locals swim on weekends. It's the one section of the coast with calmer water (protected from the main wave break by a sandbar). Safe for casual wading, not for open-ocean swimming. About the public beach →

9. Day Trip to Sipacate

Sipacate is 20 minutes by boat and offers uncrowded waves in the Sipacate-Naranjo National Park. More advanced surfers make the trip for the left-hand break that doesn't get as crowded as El Paredón's main beach. About Sipacate →

10. Do Absolutely Nothing

Sometimes the best activity at a beach village is a hammock and a book. El Paredón is exceptionally good at doing nothing in a beautiful setting.

Getting to El Paredón

El Paredón is 2.5 hours from Guatemala City and requires a 20-minute ferry from La Avellana. Full transport guide →

This little beach town is delightfully underdeveloped, authentic, and relaxed. This is not a resort town by any means. Lots of small hotels and hostels. The temperature stays hot at night, and you might have difficulty sleeping. The beach was mostly clean, and the waves were good.
